I entered the 2016 ISTD student competition. I chose a brief that was based around death, we were supposed to research death and then find an avenue to explore. I chose to explore the death of the Mayan civilisation. There were multiple different approaches I could have taken to the brief, but this offered me an chance to learn about a subject that I had never had the chance to learn about before.

The design of the book is set to mirror the content. The large format of the book was to reflect the size of the structures the Maya built. I felt that these temples needed to be shown at this size, as it helps reinforce how impressive they were. The only colour was red to not only backup the message of death, but also it was a very popular colour used within Mesoamerican cultures.

My finished article was a perfect bound, French fold book. I bound it by hand and wrapped it in a dust jacket. The whole book is printed on Fenner Redeem paper, which is a 100% recycled paper.

This Project received a pass from the ISTD Judging panel. It was also featured in Blueprint magazine, as I was one of their graduate ‘ones to watch’ in 2016.
