In my second year, I was working on a live brief for YCN. The brief I chose was creating a promotional piece for the paper company Fedrigoni. They have brought out a new range of Ultra black paper called ‘Sirio Ultra Black’. This paper is advertised as the blackest paper around, therefore the content should reflect this idea.

I designed a paper selector based around the deep ocean. I see the deep sea as one of the darkest things known to man. So I designed this to reflect that, with the depth of the ocean being represented by the thickness of the paper. The deep ocean is also one of the most mysterious areas on the planet. It is said that we know more about outer space, than we do about the floor of our own ocean.

Also each layer of the ocean has a fish screen printed from that specific zone. Each layer of the ocean is printed on a different paper weight. The deeper the ocean zone, the thicker the paper stock. The whole piece was hand screen printed with white ink on black paper. It also features silver foiling and hand stitched binding.
